Kicking Taxes and Taking Names

Three former CTF staffers are now working in the Prime Minister's office: Adam Taylor, Sara MacIntyre and John Williamson.  I hired each of them to work for the CTF and can say without reservation that they are incredibly bright, capable and importantly, committed to the ideals of limited government.  Part of me is flattered.  The PMO wouldn't be hiring people that weren't capable.  Much of the communications experience these three possess was gathered during their tenure at the CTF.  So from a...

Imagine being away from your job for months on end without anyone checking up on you. That's what was happening at the City of Winnipeg's Fire Department.Consider the following snip-it from a July 2009 City of Winnipeg audit report (see executive policy iten number #8 here) on firefighters' sick leave:"Currently, if an employee is off sick, their name is placed on an "off-duty list" and the employee will be contacted when deemed necessary by a Platoon Chief or higher level. There is no mechanism to record the employee's expected return to work date or...

'Stimulate the economy' is the rally cry we hear over and over again from governments trying to appear to be doing something about the recession. This Keynsian notion of spending our way out of a recession was buried in the 1970s and unfortunately, it seems to have risen from the dead and re-infected policy makers with  ideas that don't work. Why don't these ideas work? Because much of the so-called stimulus money is funnelled to pet projects that probably won't lead to higher economic growth, but certainly do add to the deficit and debt, which means higher taxes...

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) presented its pre-budget recommendations to the B.C. Budget 2010 Select Standing Committee  calling for: deficit elimination through spending reductions; mandatory debt retirement; a lower, flatter and simpler tax system; spending reform; and greater consumer choice.Out-of-control spending has sent B.C.'s deficit and debt to new heights. The deficit and debt must be eliminated by a commitment to a smaller, accountable government and lower overall spending – we must not leave a legacy of debt and higher taxes to future...

Magnifique! So minutes after writing about the autocratic nomination tiff in Outremont, it was announced that Michael Ignatieff bowed to pressure and "allowed" Martin Cauchon to contest the Liberal nomination in that Montreal riding.  That no candidate will have a hand laid on them and blessed as the appointed candidate is a positive development, but reinforces the point made above only a few minutes ago. That no vaguely democratic nomination race would be have been allowed to take place without such a high profile stink being raised, by a man who - regardless of...

The federal Liberals appear to be undergoing something of a unity crisis within their Quebec wing, as Ignatieff’s lieutenant Denis Coderre butts heads with former former Justice Minister Martin Cauchon.  The issue at hand is not over who will represent the electors of Outremont in Parliament, but over who will represent the Liberals in Outremont. Coderre has been “reserving” safe or highly winnable seats for star candidates and party insiders, sometimes justified as affirmative action.  The story has been portrayed as a fight between two men with ambitions...

BC Hydro, ICBC, and the BC Lottery Corporation have purchased $1.4 million in Olympic tickets to hand out to people who conserve energy, give to brokers and repair shops, or create incentives for retailers and suppliers. These Crown Corporations are funnelling yet more money to VANOC, money that could be used to lower hydro rates or ICBC premiums. While families with children face higher heating costs, BC Hydro execs will be enjoying hockey games from the comfort of luxury suites. The irony of conservation programs is as people use less energy, BC Hydro will have to...

So it seems that Jeniffer Lynch and her "Human Rights" thugs are not only above the law when it comes to censoring innocent Canadians for their opinions, but that they are also above basic government accountability as well.In a post yesterday, I indicated that the CHRC was not able to provide receipts for Commissar Lynch's travels to Vienna , Geneva, Dublin, Copenhagen and Kuala Lampur within the normal timeline.  After reading yesterday's post  however; I believe that I left out a critically important element of the Thought Police's excuse for not providing...

Just happened to catch The Agenda with Steve Paikin last night. You will recall Steve is the very able federal election debate moderator. Last night his show looked at the moving of the Phoenix Coyotes to Southern Ontario. At one point, Mr. Paikin makes the assumption that a new NHL hockey team in Ontario would bring untold economic benefits (around 19:30 in). Thankfully, Dr. Dan Mason of the University of Alberta was there to set the record straight, and explain how entertainment dollars are merely shifted around, and there is no true economic benefit.Mr....

Canada's Federal Debt

Your Share

The federal government is adding $135 million a day to our debt. At this rate, the $105-billion in debt repayment between 1997 – 2008 will be wiped out next year. Support our campaign for a federal balanced budget law and help us STOP this clock.
