Kicking Taxes and Taking Names

A federal government document gives a window into the enormous cost of the long gun registry. In 1995, the Liberal government estimated the total cost of the gun registry to be $2 million. In May 2000, an Auditor General's report showed the costs were at least $327 million.By 2006, the costs had exceeded $1 billion. Two Library of Parliament studies from 2003 estimate that the enforcement and compliance costs are substantial, running into hundreds of millions of dollars. The following is copied verbatim from the document above:Crime Statistics There are nearly 7...

Its a fitting way for a champion of the poor to leave Parliament.  NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis today announced her retiring from federal politics so that she can make her way into municipal politics as Winnipeg's new mayor.  Ms. Wasylycia-Leis was a tireless advocate for wealth redistribution and state management of the economy during her 13 years in Ottawa; which she no doubt deeply and genuinely believes helps the poor and less fortunate. Philosophical differences be what they may, she believed in what she was doing. In that spirit of sharing the...

Whatever one thinks of the CBC, it normally has a pretty smart crop of people running the show. It might be as sensationalized as the next network (insert reference the Guergis Jaffair), and many have questions about its ideological leanings, but it's normally sufficiently professional in most circumstances. As of yesterday, the CBC became the next government entity after the Revenue Agency and departments of Transportation, Environment and Industry/General Motors to care about what car a private citizen buys with his or her own money. Following yesterday's...

Twenty years ago today, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation came into being. The CTF was founded in Saskatchewan in 1990 when the Association of Saskatchewan Taxpayers and the Resolution One Association of Alberta joined forces. Since then, we've added offices from BC to Ontario, had tens of thousands more supporters come aboard, and enjoyed an impressive list of policy victories. The movement continues to grow. Click here to add your name to our email list and become part of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. We're here to stay and won't rest on our laurels.

Wednesday afternoon April 28th, the Public Safety and Security Committee again will discuss the witness list for Candice Hoeppner's bill to end the wasteful long-gun registry, Bill C-391. It remains to be seen if Canadian Taxpayers Federation Federal Director Kevin Gaudet will be one of them. Liberal MP Mark Holland, a committee vice-chair, tried to move a motion that 33 witnesses would appear in their hearings, with only 5 of them opposed to the gun registry. The CTF would be excluded. The CTF has every reason to appear before this committee. We speak on behalf of...

High municipal tax burdens drive business out of town, but a tax revolt in British Columbia has shown that municipal governments are able to do more than just raise taxes -- if left with no other choice. Small businesses and large industries toil under an unsustainable property tax burden in British Columbia. With small business, the effects slowly come to light, but with large industries, the effect is more obvious.  Surrey, for example, is doing a good job promoting business growth with low business property taxes, unlike Vancouver and Victoria. Surrey has one...

On April 22, 2010, Victoria City Council proudly announced the City's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions  by 33 per cent by 2020 and to have carbon neutral municipal operations by 2012. Acting Mayor Geoff Young made the announcement because the Mayor, Dean Fortin, had jetted off to China the week before so was unavailable.  If Victoria's local politicians wanted to spew out less hot air, they could have talked to Chinese officials over a video link. But I guess attending the opening of the world expo in Shanghai is more exciting than mucking...

Who knows what lies in the $92 million black hole of the Senate's annual spending? The Auditor General doesn't. And that's precisely the problem.A tip to the Sun newspaper chain suggests that a member of the Canadian senate is billing taxpayers for a Florida condo. But, even though the informant gave exact details regarding this property, columnist Greg Weston says it's impossible to prove or disprove the claims given the shroud that covers Senate spending.Weston's commentary won't make your day. He also explains how Senator Raymond Lavigne is facing fraud charges of...

Some Canadian Taxpayers Federation supporters have written Liberal MP Keith Martin on the gun registry and he has responded. Martin voted in favor of Bill C-391 to abolish the gun registry when it was second reading. He is a former Reform and Canadian Alliance MP who turned Liberal in 2004. But despite these roots and his previous vote, his email correspondence suggests he will vote against Bill C-391 at third reading. Here is a copy of one of Martin's standard replies.----- Original Message ----- From: Martin.K@parl.gc.ca To: (withheld) Sent: Thursday, April 22...
