Calgary's city council pension costs – update

November 13, 2017
Calgary's city council pension costs – update

Since September, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has been drawing attention to the huge bills taxpayers have been paying for city council's pension benefits in Calgary.

Previously, I posted a document with info on the cost to taxpayers for the two plans (yes, there are two!).

As we recently obtained even more details on the cost of the second pension plan, I updated the file. To see the updated document – including info on the two plans and details on what taxpayers have paid – click here.

For additional info on this matter, see these links:

September 26 news release (outlining costs, calling for reform) – click here
September 30 column in the Calgary Herald (explains the situation) – click here
October 30 news release (updates original cost data) – click here
November 2 news release (praises Councillor Farkas for refusing the pension) – click here

Finally, it's worth repeating that Edmonton struck a citizens committee a few years ago to review the pay and benefits provided to their elected officials. Their citizens committee concluded that the type of pension (a costly defined benefit plan) provided to Calgary's city council wouldn't be "appropriate" for their elected officials. Please be sure to call (403-268-2430) or email your council member and demand change!
