To the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs:
People in Canada’s First Nations communities deserve transparency. The First Nations Financial Transparency Act makes sure that people in First Nations communities can see how much their leaders are getting paid as well as the basic financial information for their bands. More than 90 per cent of First Nations communities have complied with legislation.
Unfortunately, the federal government has stated it will “cease all discretionary compliance measures related to the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.”
Failing to enforce this law is wrong.
We the undersigned call on Minister Bennett to enforce the First Nations Financial Transparency Act.
