June 29, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: Carbon tax coercion continues As British Columbians jump into their cars to go to Canada Day celebrations or take their families to the beach, they will be feeling the pinch at the pumps. On July 1st, the carbon tax goes up again, as the government continues with its plan to force people out of their cars, sit around in the dark, and wear sweaters in their homes to stop what some people believe is a looming global warming Armageddon. Statisticians would confirm you have a better chance of being eaten by a French poodle that has a penchant for sake and Dan Brown novels. Why then is Premier Doer’s party being allowed to keep taxpayer dollars it wrongfully received back in the 80’s and 90’s? Full Article
June 19, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: Protecting Toronto From a Garbage Strike TORONTO: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is urging Premier McGuinty and Mayor Miller to act swiftly should a garbage strike occur next week in Toronto. CTF Federal Director, Kevin Gaudet, said “The city’s plans for a strike should reassure taxpayers not union bosses. The only plans taxpayers need are for getting striking workers back on the job and for taxpayers to have all the services they pay for.” Full Article
June 15, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: Protecting Taxpayers From GM Now that the taxpayers from the United States and Canada are majority owners of General Motors (GM), it must learn how to provide taxpayer value beyond the usual shareholder value. One of the first ways to do this is for its most senior executives immediately to set a clear cultural leadership example. They must commit to the greatest measures of transparency and accountability. This means, at minimum, meeting if not exceeding accountability and transparency measures required of publicly-traded companies. Full Article
June 8, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: An Expo-nential Waste of Money If Edmonton and Calgary are to play in the big leagues along such "world-class" cities as Zaragoza, Spain and Yeosu, South Korea, then taxpayers have to be prepared to buck-up! At least that's the view of proponents seeking to have one of Alberta's two great cities host the 2017 Expo. Full Article
June 4, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: Time for gas tax honesty in B.C. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has held a gas tax honesty day every year since 1999 to show motorists they are paying for more than just gasoline every time they fill up. Conventional wisdom claims drivers are gouged at the gas pump and now more people realize that both the federal and provincial governments do some gouging of their own. Here in B.C. it's getting worse. It's time for more gas tax honesty.

June 4, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: Give away environmental change How can municipal governments help the environment while saving taxpayers dollars? Make a way for citizens to do it for themselves. That's the conclusion the City of Ottawa reached in 2007 through its first “Give Away Weekend.”
The idea is quite simple: twice a year the city declares a “Give Away Weekend.” People then put their unwanted items on the curb with the sign “free” placed beside. Any passer-by can take them. Full Article

May 29, 2009 Let’s Talk Taxes: Alberta: It's the dollar, stupid For Albertans, a strong Canadian dollar is a double-edged sword. On one hand, Albertans can vacation longer in Florida, gamble more in Las Vegas or get a steamin’ deal on a car just across the US border. On the other hand, a high dollar means fewer bucks in the provincial treasury, placing pressure on an already high deficit. And, the larger the deficit, the more likely the province will implement spending cuts or tax hikes. Full Article
