City of Regina's massive pension shortfall

City of Regina's massive pension shortfall

The City of Regina has a massive $246 million shortfall in its employees pension plan. A recent valuation of the plan has suggested increasing the current contribution rate of 21% (equally shared by the city and and employee) to an incredible 45.5%. Prairie Director Colin Craig says taxpayers should not be forced to kick in money for the shortfall and says there needs to be significant cuts in the pension benefits received by city employees.

Government pensions are unfair and need to be brought back in line with the private sector. Politicians just can't say "no" to union demands. There is no fair bargaining going on with public unions. The result are these ridiculous pensions.

Sorry no bailouts for this fund please. Ask the Nortel workers how their pension plan is doing today, same for GM, Chrysler, Air Canada etc. People need to remember not to put all their future retirement eggs in one place, or one fund, etc. It's the most basic rule of investing. Diversify your investments so if any one goes bad you have a fallback plan....
