Conservative Party right to oppose carbon tax

Author: Franco Terrazzano 2022/02/09

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding the Conservative Party’s renewed opposition to the carbon tax.

“Carbon taxes cost Canadians a lot of money, but aren’t working and that’s exactly the kind of policy the Official Opposition should be opposing,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the CTF. “Inflation is one of the key economic issues facing Canadian families and the carbon tax is making these tough times tougher by making it more expensive to drive to work and heat our homes.”

The Conservative Party is now opposing the carbon tax, according to the Toronto Star.

When running for Conservative Party leader, Erin O’Toole signed the Canadian Taxpayers Federation pledgeto “immediately repeal the Trudeau carbon tax; and, reject any future national carbon tax or cap-and-trade scheme.” Months before the last election, O’Toole flip-flopped to support a carbon tax.

The federal carbon tax is scheduled to increase to 11 cents per litre of gasoline on April 1, 2022. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he will increase the carbon tax to nearly 40 cents per litre of gas by 2030 and impose a second carbon tax through fuel regulations that could add an additional 11 cents per litre.

Despite having the highest carbon tax in Canada, emissions in British Columbia continue to increase. Canada’s emissions increased during the first year of the federal carbon tax.

“The carbon tax is a tax plan not an environmental plan,” said Terrazzano. “The Conservative Party is right to oppose the carbon tax and taxpayers expect the Official Opposition to hold the government accountable for rising tax bills.”
