AB: No New Tax Powers for Cities without Referendums

Alberta

To Alberta Premier Rachel Notley:

City Charters between the province and Alberta’s big cities could mean historic new tax powers for big city mayors, the likes of which Albertans have never seen before.

British Columbia’s Translink Tax referendum showed us that historic new taxes to fund transit and infrastructure plans doesn’t always reflect the will of the people.

Premier, you must give city residents a say before giving any new tax powers.

Previous premiers have told mayors to put it to a referendum and none have.

We the undersigned demand you require municipality-wide referendums before giving any new tax powers to cities.
You have the power to change who influences politics in our country: big unions, big corporations and government-funded special interest groups can be challenged by the contributions of thousands of individual taxpayers who care to make a difference.
