Scrap the Yukon Carbon Tax

To Premier Sandy Silver and Environment Minister Pauline Frost:

Your government’s plan to impose a carbon tax on Yukoners is an unfair hit to Yukon families and businesses, adding a huge cost to the necessities of life in Canada’s north.

The carbon tax will increase the price of driving, food and clothing – much of which is shipped in – and will mean lost jobs and struggling businesses.

Home heating bills will go up under the carbon tax, particularly with common oil-fired furnaces. Businesses, mining operations, schools and hospitals will also face higher heating costs, and in many cases, will pass those onto taxpayers or consumers. Others will be forced to absorb those costs and cut hours or jobs.

Rising airplane fuel costs under the carbon tax will burden both Yukon tourism and fly-in, fly-out operations, and will increase costs for Yukoners flying south for health services.

In Yukon, driving is a necessity, and you can’t simply turn down your heat. The carbon tax will have a significant impact on all Yukoners.

We the undersigned call on the Government of Yukon to scrap the carbon tax.

You have the power to change who influences politics in our country: big unions, big corporations and government-funded special interest groups can be challenged by the contributions of thousands of individual taxpayers who care to make a difference.
