AB: Scale Back Calgary’s Golden Benefits

Alberta

To Calgary City Councillors:

Calgary’s city councillors and employees are receiving benefits that are out of line with those available in other cities and the private sector. This has resulted in greater taxes for Calgarians.

The golden benefits include:

  • Retirement bonuses: Retiring city employees receive a bonus that averaged $10,814 in 2017. Taxpayers are on the hook for $73 million due to these retirement bonuses.
  • Triple pension plan: 236 City of Calgary employees set to receive three pensions from the City of Calgary. The cost to taxpayers for providing second and third pensions to city employees is about $5.2 million per year.
  • Two pensions for mayor: Calgary is the only major Canadian city that gives two pensions to its mayor. The CTF estimates that Mayor Nenshi can expect to receive approximately $1,415,791 in benefits if he lives to 85 (while only contributing approx. $158,815).
  • Defined-benefit pensions for councillors: Between 2007 and 2016, Calgary’s city council pensions cost taxpayers more than Ottawa, Edmonton and Vancouver combined.

We the undersigned call on Calgary city council to scale back these golden benefits.
