Federal: No More Trojan Horse Legislation

To Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:

It’s wrong to use Trojan horse legislation that sneaks past elected members of Parliament as an omnibus bill.

Bills should stand alone for individual scrutiny by Parliament instead of being crammed together in unreadable omnibus bills.

In the 2015 election, you made a clear promise to ensure every piece of legislation can be scrutinized by every MP: “Stephen Harper has also used omnibus bills to prevent Parliament from properly reviewing and debating his proposals. We will … bring an end to this undemocratic practice.”

You broke that promise when your government used the budget bill as Trojan horse legislation to put a loophole in the Criminal Code for corporations accused of corruption.

This tactic is unaccountable and undemocratic and needs to stop.

We the undersigned call on the Trudeau government to honour its campaign promise to stop Trojan horse legislation in omnibus bills.

You have the power to change who influences politics in our country: big unions, big corporations and government-funded special interest groups can be challenged by the contributions of thousands of individual taxpayers who care to make a difference.
