CALGARY: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation's (CTF) Centre for Aboriginal Policy Change (the Centre) today released a position paper, Apartheid - Canada's Ugly Secret.
"This position paper brings together a number of issues and positions the CTF has worked on since the Centre opened in 2002," stated Tanis Fiss, director of the Centre.
"The paper outlines a brief history of the Indian reserve system and illustrates that increased government spending and incentives have not improved the living conditions of many Indians on reserves in Canada," continued Fiss.
The paper assumes that Canadians - all Canadians - are fundamentally alike. Therefore all legislation and government policy must be based on fairness and equality - not ethnicity.
"Indian communities will only have the opportunity to become economically self-sustaining if the reserve land is transferred to the members of Indian bands and the reserve system is abolished. It is time the federal government provided Indians with a real opportunity to prosper," concluded Fiss.
The paper contains four recommendations on issues concerning abolishing the Indian reserve system, taxation, private property rights, and suspending the creation of new "urban" reserves. Copies of Apartheid - Canada's Ugly Secret may be found on the CTF's website at www.taxpayer.com, or by contacting the Centre's office in Calgary.
