The following letter to TransLink mayors chair Richard Walton was cc'd to us. It makes some great points.
Dear Mr. Walton,
I think the proposal of the Mayor's Union on additional taxes for the public in the lower mainland is very poorly conceived and not representative of the public opinion that you are meant to serve.
We in the lower mainland are already paying additional gas/carbon tax of several cents per litre for living in the lower mainland and this is meant to go toward translink. With the audit on Translink recently released this year, I think it's best to make Translink run more efficiently (be more fiscally responsible) and use our hard earned tax money more responsibly. For example, if electronic gates are being installed, then Translink should be reducing it's transit police force instead of increasing recruiting.
I believe that until Translink is able balance it's finances with the current intake of fares, all proposed project should be put on a freeze. Until Translink becomes fiscally responsible, we are just throwing hard earned tax payers money to support a failing organization. How much more taxes will be needed to support translink?
Even though I am a resident of Burnaby who uses Translink to commute to work regularly, I still strongly opposed any proposed new taxes for Translink.
Is Canada Off Track?
Canada has problems. You see them at gas station. You see them at the grocery store. You see them on your taxes.
Is anyone listening to you to find out where you think Canada’s off track and what you think we could do to make things better?
