Tour Will Include Debate Alongside Former NDP Attorney General Andrew Petter in Support of a YES Vote on May 17th
VICTORIA:The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today announced a speaking and media tour in support of its ongoing campaign for a YES vote in the May 17th referendum on voting reform. National Communications Director Troy Lanigan will address an audience in Kamloops on May 18th followed by events in Nelson, Kimberly and Cranbrook.
Kamloops: April 18
Nelson: April 19
Kimberly: April 20
Cranbrook: April 21
"This referendum is about one issue: accountable government," said Lanigan. "Promises on the part of politicians to be more accountable, provide better local representation, and decrease party discipline has failed. It's time to change the rules. Voting in favour of the Single Transferable Vote provides a historic opportunity to tilt the democratic balance in favour of voters and not political parties."
On May 6th, Lanigan will be joined by former NDP Attorney General Andrew Petter to debate two opponents on the NO side in an event sponsored by the Surrey Chamber of Commerce."
"This issue has made for strange bedfellows," Lanigan added. "But we all share a common desire to improve the state of democracy in British Columbia and Canada. A YES vote will mean that a majority of voters will finally have a say in who governs them. That's democracy. That's accountable government."
Troy Lanigan was the founding president of the Electoral Change Coalition of British Columbia in 1997 and a founding board director of Fair Vote Canada.
