CTF calls for binding referendum on Saskatoon casino proposal

Author: David Maclean 2003/01/16
REGINA: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is calling on Saskatoon City Council to hold a binding referendum on SIGA's proposal for a new casino in the city. Since its inception, the CTF has been a leading advocate for direct democracy and democratic reform.

"The Saskatoon casino proposal is a case where a referendum can help resolve what is increasingly a divisive issue," said CTF Saskatchewan Director David MacLean. "A binding referendum would ensure all citizens have their say, and provide city council with a clear and irrefutable mandate to implement the wishes of the community."

"The people of Saskatoon are more than capable of having a calm and rational debate, and making a sound decision based on all aspects of the issue," said MacLean.

"At the end of the day, citizens should be given the opportunity vote with their conscience on this issue," said MacLean. "The people should not have such an important decision imposed upon them."

"City Council should have the courage to let the people decide."
