Halifax NS: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) reacting to the Glooscap band reserve news conference today says that now more than ever its time for Assembly of first nations and Canada’s opposition leaders to support making band members salaries and compensation public.
“This whole situation could have been avoided if the Assembly of First Nations and Canada’s opposition leaders support our call for full transparency of native chief and councillors salaries,” says Kevin Lacey, Atlantic Direct of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Only by opening up the process, to accountability can we ensure that all the business on reserves is fully transparent.”
The CTF points out that average Band Chief salary in Atlantic Canada is about $100,000 and the average band size is only about 750 people.
The CTF also salutes some of the changes designed to make the Glooscap reserve more transparent, it hopes that other reserves follow suit.
“It took almost 10 days of band members petitioning their council and pushing for reforms in the media to have this information to be made public. This is why the CTF works to publish this type of information, to allow for citizens to fight to change government that has gone wrong.”
