Income Tax Free Alberta

Author: John Carpay 2001/02/14
EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) will be releasing a study at a news conference in Calgary on Tuesday, February 20th. The study examines the potential for eliminating personal income tax in Alberta after the province's debt has been retired in two years.

Authored by Dr. Jean-Francois Wen of the Economics Department at the University of Calgary, the study posits that a build-up of the Alberta Heritage Trust Fund could eventually generate enough revenue to replace what is raised through personal income tax. The study further examines both time-frame and how the Fund can be protected from political interference in the future.

"Elections are about ideas and new visions," said CTF Acting Alberta Director Troy Lanigan. "This is a positive vision for Alberta's future and one that will pave the way for tremendous prosperity."

The press conference promises to be the beginning of a CTF-led campaign to eliminate personal income taxes in the province. Alberta would be the first province in the country to do so.
