TORONTO: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) announced today that it will file legal proceedings against the McGuinty government next week to ensure respect of the rule of law and protect the rights of Ontario taxpayers.

"The taxes imposed in the May 18 budget violate the Taxpayer Protection Act, which Mr. McGuinty promised to uphold," said Ontario Director Tasha Kheiriddin. "After careful deliberation and discussions with counsel, the CTF will proceed to file a claim next week."

The CTF is responding to overwhelming public demand for action on this matter. In the two days since the budget was introduced in the Legislature, the CTF has received hundreds of calls and e-mails asking it to begin legal proceedings. Thousands of taxpayers have pledged financial support for legal action through radio call-in shows, and 10,000 more Ontarians have added their names to the CTF's online petition calling on the Premier to not raise taxes and not run a deficit. The total number of signatures on this petition is now over 20,000 and continues to grow by the hour.

In addition to the lawsuit, the CTF will be organizing a No More Lies rally against the Liberal government at Queen's Park the week of June 7. An exact date will be made public once a demonstration permit has been obtained.

"On May 18, the McGuinty government declared war on taxpayers," said Kheiriddin. "Today, taxpayers begin fighting back."

Donations to the Legal Fund and Rally Fund can be made on the CTF's website at www.taxpayer.com or by calling 1-800-667-7933.
