Halifax, NS: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) says now is the time to reform the way Halifax’s mayor and city councillors pay is set. The CTF is recommending that city council stop using comparisons to other cities as a way to set salary and instead set up a real citizens’ panel of randomly selected municipal taxpayers to set the salary and benefits of city council members.
“Halifax needs to change the way it’s doing business,” says Kevin Lacey, Atlantic Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “It’s time to allow the citizens of Halifax to set the pay and benefits for our councillors and mayor.”
These types of commissions have been used in the past. The process was adopted successfully in British Columbia in respect of the salaries of provincial politicians, as well as on democratic reforms.
"This vital role for the public in coming up with a solution adds much needed transparency and accountability. It will ultimately make our city governance stronger.”
