Petition
EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today challenged the Klein government to abolish the 3% tax it collects on car insurance and other insurance policies. This fiscal year (2004-05) the Alberta Government will collect $165 million from insurance taxes, which cost the average Alberta family over $200 per year, hidden in the price of insurance policies.
The CTF is starting a petition campaign to have the 3% tax abolished.
"While pretending to care about the high cost of insurance, the Alberta government actually benefits from high premiums with a three percent tax on every policy sold," stated CTF-Alberta director John Carpay.
"Abolishing this hidden tax will lower premiums by three percent for all drivers, and will also lower insurance costs of homeowners and businesses," added Carpay.
"Most of the tax increases imposed by Premier Klein in 2002 are still in place. The Alberta government is swimming in money and can easily forego this $165 million, which is less than one percent of annual revenues," concluded Carpay.
The petition is available from the CTF's Edmonton office and also posted on the CTF's web site Click here.
