The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Wab Kinew to follow other provinces and the federal government and cut gas taxes to provide relief to Manitobans facing high prices at the fuel pump.
The price of gasoline in Manitoba is about $1.75 per litre. The price of diesel is $2.51 per litre.
“Other governments are rightly making life more affordable at the pumps and the Manitoba government needs to follow suit,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Kinew can eliminate the provincial gas tax today and save drivers about $15 every time they fill up a pick-up truck.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his suspension of the federal 10 cent per litre gas tax and four cent per litre diesel tax until 2027 in early September.
The Alberta government is cutting its 13 cent per litre tax on gasoline and diesel on Oct. 1 to save drivers money.
The Prince Edward Island government cut its fuel tax on Sept. 26, saving Islanders 8.47 cents per litre on gasoline and 14.15 cents per litre on diesel until Jan. 31, 2027.
The Parti Québécois, currently leading Quebec election polling, is also promising to cut gas taxes if elected.
The Manitoba government currently charges a 12.5 cent per litre tax on gasoline and diesel. A Manitoba family pays about $9 in the provincial gas tax when they fill up a minivan and $12 for a pick-up truck.
The Manitoba government previously cut its provincial fuel tax to zero for the entirety of 2024. Kinew said that cut was the “the most important thing that a provincial government ever did in the history of Manitoba.”
“Other provinces and the federal government are taking action on affordability and its time for Kinew to do the same,” Haubrich said. “Kinew knows that gas tax cuts make life more affordable and its time he gives Manitobans the relief at the pumps they need.”
