VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier David Eby to keep his promise to scrap the B.C. carbon tax immediately, following the federal government’s decision to end the carbon tax backstop.
“Eby has no more excuses — he must end the carbon tax today,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the CTF. “British Columbians can’t afford to keep paying a carbon tax every time they heat their homes or drive to work.”
During the provincial election, Eby promised to eliminate the B.C. carbon tax as soon as Ottawa allows.
“The government remains committed to removing the consumer carbon tax should the federal government remove the requirement for carbon pricing across Canada,” stated B.C.’s budget on March 4.
If Eby fails to cancel the carbon tax, British Columbians are going to be slapped by his government with a carbon tax hike on April 1, increasing the burden from 17.6 cents per litre of gasoline to 21 cents per litre.
Under the current plan, the carbon tax will cost British Columbians more than $3 billion this year.
“It’s wrong to keep punishing British Columbians with a carbon tax when Ottawa is scrapping it for millions of other taxpayers,” said Binda. “The premier promised to cut the carbon tax and he needs to keep that promise immediately.”
