News Release: Taxpayers applaud Vancouver scrapping single-use cup tax

Author: Carson Binda 2023/03/29

Vancouver, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Vancouver City Council for scrapping the 25 cent fee on single-use cups.

“Charging consumers for supporting their local coffee shops was bad policy” said Carson Binda, B.C. director for the CTF. “Fees for single use cups were bad for consumers and bad for local business.”

As of May 1, businesses will no longer be required to charge 25 cents for single-use cups. Axing the single-use cup tax will save Vancouverites $1.7 million per month.

“Scrapping the cup tax is a good first step,” said Binda. “Now we need council to take a hard look at the municipal budget to find savings for taxpayers, instead of spending money faster than ever.”

Vancouver’s property taxes will rise by 10.7 per cent this year. City government is increasing taxes to cover increased spending. The municipal operating budget for 2023 has increased to $1.97 billion, $220 more than last year.
