NEWS RELEASE: Taxpayers call on Federal NDP to support home-heating affordability

Author: Carson Binda 2023/11/02

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on NDP MPs from British Columbia to vote in favour of taking the carbon tax off of all home heating.

“This is the NDP’s chance to fight for the little guy and stand up for affordability,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “There are 13 NDP MPs from B.C., more than in any other province in the country. They need to do the right thing on Monday and vote to suspend the carbon tax on home heating before the winter chill sets in.”

The average home in Canada uses 2,385 cubic meters of natural gas per year, meaning that a suspension of the carbon tax on home heating fuels would save families about $300 this year. In total, after rebates, the carbon tax will cost an average Canadian family up to $710 this year

NDP MPs are clearly on the record raising concerns about affordability.

“For the last two years, the rising cost of living has been devastating for Canadian families struggling to pay for their mortgages, groceries, and home heating fuel,” said Laurel Collins, NDP MP for Victoria.

“British Columbians are counting on NDP MPs to stand up to the prime minister and vote to give us all a break on our home heating bills,” said Binda. “Canadian workers and families shouldn’t be punished for staying warm in the winter and this is the NDP’s chance to champion affordability.”
