News Release: Taxpayers Federation calls on B.C. Government to release cost and deliverables for new downtown eastside czar

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the B.C. government to immediately release the total compensation and deliverables expected of new downtown eastside czar Larry Campbell.

“Taxpayers deserve to know exactly how much we’re paying Campbell and what we’re getting for that money,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “We want to see clear deliverables and the metrics that will track his performance.”

The previous downtown eastside czar, Michael Bryant, was in line to receive $150,000 for a six-month contract, with the possibility of an extension for a total of $300,000. The province decided not to renew his contract.

Premier David Eby previously claimed it was a communications error to have withheld the previous czar’s contract details.

Now the province is hiring another downtown eastside czar, but has not released the contract details for the position.

“The government keeps appointing highly paid czars and consultants, but folks in the downtown eastside are still struggling,” Binda said. “The government must not make the same mistake as last time and it needs to immediately release the full contract details.”
