News Release: Taxpayers Federation calls on Eby Government to suspend gas taxes as prices sky-rocket

Author: Carson Binda 2024/02/26

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier David Eby to cut the provincial motor fuels tax which would save families $7.40 per minivan fill up.

“Gas prices in Metro Vancouver have jumped-up by 14 cents in just a few days,” said Carson Binda, British Columbia Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Eby should do the right thing and save families money by scrapping the provincial motor fuels tax.”

Other provinces like Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba have all reduced taxes on fuel and energy in the past months. In Saskatchewan, stopped collecting federal carbon taxes on home heating which contributed to a nearly one per cent reduction in inflation.

“Eby could save families money today and bring down the inflation by axing the motor fuels tax,” Binda said. “Gas tax relief isn’t a partisan issue. Manitoba’s NDP government is lifting its motor fuels tax and so has the Conservative government in Ontario. Eby should do the same thing in British Columbia.”

British Columbians pay the highest taxes on a litre of gasoline in the country. The total tax burden on a litre of gas is about:

  • 77 cents in Metro Vancouver,

  • 70 cents in Greater Victoria,

  • 63 cents in the rest of B.C.
