Canadian provincial politicians took substantially bigger salaries than American state representatives in 2025, according to a new report from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
“Ontario MPPs are some of the highest paid politicians in North America and they’re not delivering better results,” said Noah Jarvis, CTF Ontario Director. “Giving bigger paycheques to politicians doesn’t lead to better outcomes for taxpayers.”
The median Canadian provincial politician made nearly three times the salary of the median American state representative at $113,637 and $45,002 respectively, according to the report.
Ontario MPPs got paid $157,350 in 2025, the highest salary among Canada’s provincial politicians and the fourth highest salary of subnational politicians across Canada and the United States.
While Ontario MPPs are paid significantly more than most of their peers, Ontario’s economy is stalling compared states with lower politician pay.
The average Ontarian is poorer than the average American in 43 of the 50 states, according to per capita GDP statistics from economist Trevor Tombe. Ontario MPPs earn more than politicians in 40 of the 43 American states that have a higher GDP per capita than Ontario.
“Ontario politicians take double the pay of their average American counterparts while hitting families with higher taxes,” Jarvis said. “Bigger salaries aren’t motivating politicians to leave more money in the pockets of taxpayers.”
Ontario MPPs unanimously passed legislation in 2025 to increase their salaries by 35 per cent while bringing back annual pay raises.
About 86 per cent of decided Ontarians opposed MPPs giving themselves another pay raise this year, with only 14 per cent in support of the salary bump, according to a Leger poll.
“Ontario politicians are some of the highest paid politicians across Canada and the United States,” Jarvis said. “Ontario MPPs need to stop shoving more taxpayer cash into their pockets with annual pay raises.”
