SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Saskatchewan government to explain why Saskatchewan Government Insurance tops the rankings as Saskatchewan’s most expensive Crown corporation board while hiking car insurance rates for the first time in more than a decade.

“The Saskatchewan government needs to explain why SGI operates the most expensive Crown corporation board in the province,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “SGI’s board cost $1.4 million over three years and now the government wants drivers to pay more.”

SGI’s board of directors cost about $1.4 million in remuneration and expenses over the last three years, making it the most expensive commercial Crown corporation board in Saskatchewan.

SGI board members received $32,278 on average in remuneration and expenses over the last three years. By comparison, directors at SaskGaming, the least expensive Crown corporation, received $16,074 per director on average.

SGI also paid the highest board remuneration in the province. Denis Perrault received $52,000 in compensation in 2024-25.

The largest expense claim by a Crown corporation director came from SaskPower. Tammy Van Lambalgen charged $11,427 in expenses in 2022-23.

SGI is hiking car insurance rates for the first time since 2014 this year, costing the average driver about $48 more annually.

“At the end of the day, this is taxpayers’ money,” Haubrich said. “Saskatchewan taxpayers own SGI and they shouldn’t pay for the most expensive board in the province only to get hit with higher rates.”
