Taxpayers call for sales tax cuts and balanced budget in Newfoundland and Labrador

Author: Jay Goldberg 2023/11/16

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation pre-budget submission is calling on the Furey government to cut the sales tax, extend the gas tax cut by another year and balance the books.

“With Newfoundlanders and Labradorians facing soaring living costs, now is the time for Premier Andrew Furey to be bold,” said CTF Interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. “Furey could make a historic move by cutting the provincial portion of the HST by two percentage points, saving the average family $710 next year alone and making Newfoundland and Labrador the province with the lowest sales tax in the region.”

The CTF’s proposal also calls on the Furey government to implement savings recommendations made by the Premier’s Economic Recovery Team, replace corporate welfare with business tax cuts and bringing government employee compensation in line with the private sector.

“Furey deserves credit for his gas tax cut, which has saved the typical Newfoundland and Labrador family nearly $1,000 over the past 18 months,” Goldberg said. “But family budgets are being squeezed even further and Furey needs to do more. Now is the time to be prudent with taxpayer dollars, balance the books and lower taxes.”
