Taxpayers call for tax cuts and spending reduction as N.L. provincial election kicks off

Author: Devin Drover 2025/09/16

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on all political parties to commit to meaningful tax relief as the provincial election campaign begins.

“Family budgets are being squeezed and this campaign needs to be about making life more affordable,” said Devin Drover, Atlantic Director for the CTF. “Every party should promise concrete tax cuts that put money back in people’s pockets and help small businesses grow.”

The CTF is calling for five priority commitments from political parties:

1.        Make the temporary gas-tax cut permanent: Stop the looming hike to gas prices and keep families saving.

2.        Cut personal income taxes: Lower rates so work pays more and families keep more of what they earn.

3.        Reduce sales tax by one percentage point: Match Nova Scotia’s recent HST rate cut to deliver immediate relief at the checkout.

4.        Cut business taxes and raise the small-business threshold: Help local employers keep more of their earnings and qualify for the lower business tax rate so they can hire and invest.

5.        Implement PERT spending reduction measures.  Eliminate wasteful government spending to save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

“Government can’t spend its way out of a cost-of-living crisis,” said Drover. “Tax relief and real spending reductions are the fastest and fairest way to help every household and jump-start growth across the province.”

The provincial election will be held on October 14, 2025.
