Taxpayers call on Newfoundland and Labrador MPs to vote to scrap the carbon tax on home heating

Author: Jay Goldberg 2023/11/02

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on all Newfoundland and Labrador MPs to vote in favour of a motion to remove the carbon tax from all home heating in a vote scheduled for Monday.

“MP Ken McDonald had the courage to stand up for his constituents and that stand is obviously a big part of the reason the federal government is taking the carbon tax off furnace oil,” said CTF Interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. “But there’s more work to do because all Canadians need tax relief on their home heating bills.

“All MPs from Newfoundland and Labrador need to follow McDonald’s example and vote for the carbon tax exemption to be extended to all forms of home heating.”

About 18 per cent of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians use home heating oil.

The Trudeau government suspended the carbon tax on home heating oil for the next three years. That will save households that use home heating oil an average of $272. However, just three per cent of Canadian households use heating oil to heat their homes. The carbon tax will remain in place on other forms of home heating.

Liberal MP Ken McDonald recently voted in favour of a motion to scrap carbon tax. Newfoundland and Labrador’s five other Liberal MPs, including Gudie Hutchings, Seamus O’Regan, Churence Rogers, Yvonne Jones, and Joanne Thompson, voted to keep the carbon tax in place.

MPs will vote on another motion to take carbon taxes off all home heating on Monday.

“It’s time for all of Newfoundland and Labrador's MPs to stand up for their constituents the way Ken McDonald did,” said Goldberg. “Every MP should be voting to remove the carbon tax from home heating.”
