Taxpayers call on Ontario NDP to support gas tax relief

Author: Jay Goldberg 2023/08/23

Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Ontario NDP leader Marit Stiles to follow the lead of Manitoba NDP leader Wab Kinew and support gas tax relief for drivers at the pumps.

“Manitoba NDP leader Wab Kinew is clearly showing that he understands that politicians need to make life more affordable by cutting taxes,” said Jay Goldberg, Ontario Director of the CTF. “Kinew is calling for a six-month suspension of Manitoba’s 14 cent per litre gas tax. Stiles can show she wants to make life more affordable by calling on the Ford government to extend its temporary 6.4 cent per litre gas tax cut for another year.”

The Ford government’s 6.4 cent per litre gas tax cut has been in place since July of 2022. The typical two-car family has saved over $400 since then. If Ford doesn’t extend the government’s gas tax cut, gas taxes will rise by 6.4 cents per litre on Jan. 1, 2024.

“It’s time for the Ontario NDP to recognize that taxpayers need relief at the pumps,” Goldberg said. “Taxes add more than 50 cents to the cost of every litre of gasoline. Government can make life more affordable by making it easier for families to get their kids to school and drive to work. It’s time for Stiles to take a page out of Kinew’s playbook and step up and support relief for drivers at the pump.”
