Wakeham cuts cabinet, saving taxpayers $400,000

Author: Devin Drover 2025/10/29

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is welcoming Premier Tony Wakeham’s decision to reduce the size of Newfoundland and Labrador’s cabinet, saving taxpayers about $400,000 over the next four years.

“This is a positive first step that shows Wakeham is serious about cutting waste and finding savings for taxpayers,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director. “By trimming the size of cabinet, the premier is setting the right tone that government should live within its means.”

Before the election, Newfoundland and Labrador had 16 cabinet ministers. By comparison, Saskatchewan, a province with more than double Newfoundland and Labrador’s population, also has 16 cabinet ministers.

Wakeham’s new government now includes 14.

“Fewer ministers means more savings for taxpayers and a more focused government,” said Drover. “It’s the kind of leadership taxpayers want, which is focused less on political overhead and more on delivering results.”

Cabinet ministers in Newfoundland and Labrador make $48,664 on top of their base MHA salary of $95,357, for a total of $144,021. The reduction of two cabinet positions will save taxpayers roughly $100,000 per year, or about $400,000 over the next four years
