The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on premier-designate Tony Wakeham to save taxpayers’ money and shrink the size of Newfoundland and Labrador’s cabinet when he is sworn in.
“Wakeham has an opportunity to show taxpayers that he’s serious about cutting waste and finding savings for tax relief,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director. “That starts with setting the tone at the top and reducing the number of cabinet ministers.”
Before the election, Newfoundland and Labrador had 16 cabinet ministers. Saskatchewan, with more than double the population, also has 16 cabinet ministers.
“Newfoundland and Labrador doesn’t need as many ministers as a province twice its size,” said Drover. “Fewer politicians cashing extra cheques means more savings for taxpayers.”
Cabinet ministers in Newfoundland and Labrador make $48,664 on top of their base MHA salary of $95,357, for a total of $144,021. Cabinet minister salaries cost taxpayers about an extra $779,000 per year.
“Every unnecessary cabinet position costs taxpayers nearly $50,000 a year,” said Drover. “Trimming the cabinet by even a few seats would send the right message that Wakeham’s government is focused on savings, not perks.”
