WINNIPEG: In anticipation of the Provincial budget, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) attaches a 1999 breakdown of tax rates province by province. The Inter-provincial tax comparison shows that the Manitoba government now has the dubious distinction of charging the highest general tax rates in Western Canada. "Manitoba is losing the tax relief race," said Victor Vrsnik, CTF Manitoba Director. "We've fallen behind the pack interns of income tax, sales tax, corporate income tax and payroll tax." To improve our competitive standing and offset the impact of net payroll tax hikes and bracket creep, the CTF is calling for a six-point broad-based income tax cut.
Victor Vrsnik will be available for comment tomorrow after the Budget lock-up at the Legislature.
CTF Offers Instant E-mail Service For Tax Raged Canadians
The CTF today posted a "form" tax rage letter on its Internet site at
www.taxpayer.com that can be immediately forwarded to Paul Martin and five of his colleagues as a means for Canadians to quickly express their outrage at Canada's high taxes.
A message urging the Finance Minister to lower federal income taxes will be carbon copied to five backbench Liberal MPs representing all regions of the country. They are as follows:
- Atlantic Region Wayne Easter, MP for Malpeque (PEI)
- Quebec Region Nick Descepola, MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges (Quebec)
- Ontario Region Paul Szabo, MP for Mississauga South (Ontario)'
- Western Region Reg Alcock, MP for Winnipeg South (Manitoba)
- Pacific Region Sophia Leung, MP for Vancouver Kingsway (British Columbia)
"We hope that hundreds, if not thousands of Canadian taxpayers take a few minutes to channel their tax rage into this constructive pursuit. Canadians are encouraged to inform the Finance Minister and the government's whipped backbenchers how taxpayers feel about Canada's excessively high and oppressive taxation," remarked Vrsnik.
