Ontario man surprised to get his Ralphbucks
EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) was contacted today by Brian Clegg, a resident of Brantford, Ontario overwhelmed by the Alberta government's generosity when he opened his mail today.
Brian, a 43 year-old production supervisor at a power-steering and brake hose manufacturing plant in his home of Brantford, Ontario was more than a little surprised when he returned home from work to find a $400 Resource Rebate cheque with his correct name and address on it from the Alberta government.
"My wife told me to open up this letter as soon as I walked in the door because it had the Alberta logo on it and it looked like it might be a cheque," said Brian "as soon as I saw it was $400 I thought to myself 'alright four-hundred bucks'."
Brian has never lived or worked in Alberta, nor does he have any kids or immediate family members living in Alberta. In fact, Brian has lived in Ontario for his entire life.
When questioned as to why he thought he might have received a cut of the $1.4 billion payout intended for Albertans Brian responded, "I have no idea why they sent me a cheque. Don't they screen their cheques before they send them out "
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation's Alberta director, Scott Hennig was not surprised by the news, "You could see this coming miles away", said Hennig. "We're just wondering how many other non-Alberta residents, prisoners, dogs and who know what else are receiving their Ralphbucks this week."
"We support the Alberta government giving money back to taxpayers, but we hoped it would be Alberta taxpayers," continued Hennig. "It's unlikely these kinds of screw-ups would be happening if they had decided to eliminate health care premiums or the 3% sales tax on insurance instead."
"Taxpayers should hope that this is the only screw-up, because if it isn't, the $10 million slated for administering this one-time program could be eaten up just trying to clean up the mess they have created," concluded Hennig.
