The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Wab Kinew to scrap his hidden bracket creep tax hike that will cost Manitobans up to $2,917 by 2030, according to the CTF’s bracket creep report.
“Manitobans can’t afford Kinew’s sneaky bracket creep tax hike that’s taking hundreds of dollars from right under their noses,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Failing to adjust tax brackets to inflation is a stealth tax hike on Manitobans that will increase their tax bills every single year.”
The government stopped indexing income tax brackets to inflation in Budget 2025. That’s a stealth tax hike called bracket creep. It means that inflation can automatically bump taxpayers into a higher tax bracket and increase their tax bill. And it happens without a single vote to raise taxes.
Bracket creep will cost individual Manitobans up to $2,917 by 2030.
The provincial government previously started indexing tax brackets in 2017. Ontario is the only other province to currently impose some form of bracket creep.
A family earning $75,000 pays more taxes in Manitoba than anywhere else in Western Canada.
“Manitobans need tax relief, not expensive backdoor tax hikes,” Haubrich said. “Kinew needs to reverse his sneaky bracket creep tax hike and cut taxes to make life more affordable for Manitoba taxpayers.”
