The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Toronto mayoral candidate Brad Bradford for his pledge to freeze property taxes in his first year as mayor and cut government waste.

“Toronto taxpayers have been struggling to keep up with rising taxes and deserve some relief,” said Noah Jarvis, CTF Ontario Director. “Bradford’s promise to freeze property taxes in his first year as mayor is common-sense solution to make life more affordable in Toronto.”

Bradford pledged to freeze Toronto’s property taxes at last night’s Toronto Region Board of Trade debate.

“I’m going to freeze your taxes for year one to provide immediate affordability relief,” Bradford said. 

City Hall has hiked taxes on property owners by nearly 20 per cent in the past three years. Mayor Olivia Chow hiked property taxes by 9.5 per cent in 2024, 6.9 per cent in 2025 and 2.2 per cent in 2026.

Mayoral candidate Chris Alexander has also pledged to freeze property taxes in his first year as mayor, while Chow has promised property tax hike “at or around” the annual inflation rate.

An average household will pay $738 more in property taxes than they did in 2023.

Bradford also announced he would launch an independent line-by-line review of city spending, the first since 2011.

“Bradford understands that when the city wastes money, that drive up taxes for the hardworking folks that keep the city running,” Jarvis said. “Every candidate for mayor and city council needs to recognize Torontonians need meaningful tax relief to make life more affordable.”
