Carbon tax costs average Ontario family $627 this year

Author: Franco Terrazzano 2024/03/28

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to scrap the carbon tax, which is set to increase April 1.

“If Trudeau really cares about making life more affordable for Canadians, then at the very least he wouldn’t hike his carbon tax again,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “The Parliamentary Budget Officer is clear: the carbon tax costs average families hundreds of dollars more every year than they get back in rebates.”

The federal carbon tax is set to increase to 17 cents per litre of gasoline, 21 cents per litre of diesel and 15 cents per cubic metre of natural gas on April 1.

The carbon tax will cost the average family in Ontario $627 a year more than they get back in rebates, according to the PBO.

In Ontario, 71 per cent of individuals oppose the April 1 carbon tax increase, according to a Leger poll commissioned by the CTF.

“The carbon tax makes it more expensive to fuel our cars, heat our homes and fill our fridges,” Terrazzano said. “Trudeau should listen to Canadians and stop hiking taxes that make our lives more expensive.”
