The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Ontario Premier Doug Ford to cut spending as the Financial Accountability Office shows the government’s expenditures went billions over budget in 2025.
“The Ford government had the opportunity to borrow less money with rising revenues, but it’s making the irresponsible decision to increase spending by billions,” said Noah Jarvis, CTF Ontario Director. “That choice means more debt being piled up on the backs of taxpayers while they have to pay higher debt interest charges.”
The Ford government overspent its 2025 budget plans by almost $4 billion, according to the Financial Accountability Office’s new report on government spending.
The Ford government originally planned on increasing spending by 2.1 per cent in the 2025 budget from the previous year.
However, the FAO now estimates the Ford government increased government spending by 4.1 per cent in 2025-26.
As a result, the Ford government increased Ontario’s debt by $32.3 billion in 2025, according to the most recent provincial budget.
Government spending has since increased by $5.8 billion in the 2026 budget.
Since its first budget, the Ford government has increased government spending by 21.4 per cent, adjusted for inflation. Government debt has also risen by 43.7 per cent during the same period.
Rising debt has driven up debt interest charges to a projected $17.2 billion this year, more than the government spends on post-secondary education.
“Ford’s big spending is driving up government debt and forcing taxpayers to pay a bigger debt interest bill every year,” Jarvis said. “Ford needs to make smarter choices by exercising some restraint with taxpayer money.”
