The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to listen to Ontario Premier Doug Ford and extend his federal gas tax cut.

“The last thing Canadians struggling with the cost-of-living need is Carney making life more expensive by hiking gas taxes,” said Noah Jarvis, CTF Ontario Director. “Ford is right to oppose hiking the federal gas tax that will raise prices at the pump.”

The Carney government temporarily suspended its fuel tax on gas and diesel in April. The federal government will hike its fuel tax back up to 10 cents per litre of gas and four cents per litre of diesel on Sept. 8, 2026.

Ford is calling on Carney to extend tax relief at the gas pump permanently.

“I [Ford] am urging you [Carney] to extend the suspension of the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel until at least January 1, 2027. The federal government could also match Ontario’s ambition to lower costs by making the suspension permanent,” Ford said. 

Leger polling shows that 63 per cent of Canadians oppose the federal government hiking fuel taxes in September. Among Canadians decided on the issue, 71 per cent oppose hiking the gas tax.

The Ford government temporarily cut Ontario’s gas tax by 5.7 cents a litre in 2022. The Ford government made this gas tax cut permanent in July 2025.

“Ford is showing great leadership by urging the prime minister to cancel his September fuel tax hike,” Jarvis said. “Now, Canada’s nine other premiers need to step up and pressure Carney to cancel his gas tax hike.”
