Furey poised to increase gas taxes

Author: Jay Goldberg 2022/10/31

St. John’s, NL: Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey’s gas tax cut is set to expire two months from today, leading to a tax hike of seven cents per litre at the pumps.

“With gas prices sky-high and inflation at levels not seen in decades, this is the worst possible time to raise taxes on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” said CTF interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. “Furey should immediately announce that he will make his temporary gas tax cut permanent.”

Beginning in May, Furey reduced the provincial gas excise tax by seven cents per litre for a period of eight months. The typical two-car household will have saved $275 by the end of the relief period. The gas tax cut is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2022.

“With energy bills expected to soar, the federal government’s plan to triple the carbon tax and household grocery bills up by $1,000 this year over last, Newfoundlanders and Labrador need for Furey to deliver permanent tax relief,” said Goldberg.
