Kinew needs to follow Carney on gas tax relief

Author: Gage Haubrich 2026/04/14

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Wab Kinew to cut the provincial gas tax after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced he’s temporarily cutting the federal gas tax next week.

“Carney is right to recognize that drivers need relief and Kinew needs to follow suit,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Manitoba drivers are paying record prices at the pump and Kinew can give them a break today by cutting the gas tax.”

The price of gasoline in Manitoba is about $1.70 per litre. That’s an increase of about 40 cents per litre since March 1.

Carney is cutting the 10 cents per litre federal gas tax until Labour Day.

This will save drivers about $7 every time they fill up a minivan and about $10 when they fill up a pick-up truck.

The Manitoba government previously cut its provincial gas tax by 14 cents per litre for the entirety of 2024. The government hiked the gas tax to 12.5 cents per litre on Jan. 1, 2025.

A Manitoba family pays about $9 in the provincial gas tax every time they fill up a minivan and about $11 when they fill up a pick-up truck. Over the course of a year, that family will pay about $550 in gas taxes when filling up their vehicles once every two weeks.

Kinew recently called his previous gas tax cut the “most important thing that a provincial government ever did in the history of Manitoba.”

Kinew also recently said that if gas prices stay high, he may cut the gas tax again next month.

“Carney is taking action on affordability now and its time for Kinew to do the same,” Haubrich said. “Kinew knows that gas tax cuts make life more affordable. He needs to go back to what works and cut the gas tax again to provide relief to Manitoba drivers.”

A Winnipeg family earning $75,000 pays more provincial taxes than a similar family living in Regina, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal.
