Main Estimates show Carney hiking spending again

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to cut spending in response to today’s Main Estimates that show federal spending increasing again in 2026-27.

“Carney repeatedly told Canadians he’s going to spend less, but he keeps spending billions of dollars more,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “Carney needs to cut spending because taxpayers can’t afford to waste more than $1 billion every week paying interest charges on the government debt.”

The federal government released its main spending plan for 2026-27 today, formally known as the Main Estimates.

This year’s spending will increase to $505.8 billion, which is $17.7 billion more than last year’s Main Estimates.

Debt interest charges are also increasing in 2026-27 to $54 billion.

The Main Estimates project the cost of the bureaucracy increasing again in 2026-27. The bureaucracy will cost taxpayers $65.8 billion, which is up five per cent over the last year. The cost of the bureaucracy increased 80 per cent between 2015 and 2024.

Not only is the cost of the bureaucracy increasing, so is the cost of consultants, contractors and outsourcing. The government plans to spend $26.6 billion on “professional and special services” in 2026-27. The government’s spending on consultants, contractors and outsourcing more than doubled between 2015 and 2024.

Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to add $324 billion to the debt by 2030. For comparison, former prime minister Justin Trudeau projected to add $154 billion to the debt over those same years.

“The government is wasting more money on debt interest charges, it’s wasting more money paying bureaucrats and it’s wasting more money paying consultants, contractor and on outsourcing,” Terrazzano said. “Here’s a question for the prime minister: When are Canadian taxpayers going to see real savings?

“After a decade of out-of-control spending, finding savings in every area of the budget should be like finding water in the ocean.”
