CALGARY. AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling for Alberta to live up to its low tax reputation and cut gas taxes as the CTF releases its Gas Tax Honesty Report.
“Alberta used to lead the country in low fuel taxes, but Manitoba is still beating us,” said Kris Sims, CTF Alberta Director during a press conference in Calgary. “The Alberta government needs to cut the fuel tax and obliterate all carbon taxes in the province.”
The CTF reveals the hidden fuel taxes that drivers are paying per litre of gasoline and diesel across Canada in its 27th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report.
With federal and provincial fuel taxes combined, Albertans pay 29 cents in taxes per litre of gasoline and 23.6 cents per litre of diesel.
Drivers in Manitoba pay 28 cents per litre of gas and 23.4 cents per litre of diesel in tax.
The big change this year is the elimination of the so-called consumer carbon tax.
With that carbon tax gone, drivers are saving more than 17 cents per litre of gasoline and 21 cents per litre of diesel.
Now, filling up a minivan with gasoline in Alberta costs $21 in total taxes, while filling up a pickup truck will cost about $33 in total taxes.
Filling up the tanks on a big rig diesel truck now costs truckers about $200 extra in taxes.
“The federal consumer carbon tax is gone and now we need to go all the way and get rid of the hidden industrial carbon tax here in Alberta,” said Sims. “Prime Minister Mark Carney is getting ready to bludgeon Alberta with his ‘improved and tightened’ industrial carbon tax.
“Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has already ended all carbon taxes in his province, including the industrial carbon tax. Premier Danielle Smith should do the right thing and declare Alberta to be a carbon tax-free zone.”
