WINNIPEG, MB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Wab Kinew to cut the provincial gas tax and the federal government to keep its fuel tax cut after releasing its 28th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report, shining a light on all the hidden taxes that make fueling up more expensive.

“Kinew can give Manitobans a break today by cutting the gas tax,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “The government shouldn’t be increasing the pain at the pump by charging high fuel taxes on top of high prices.”

The price of gasoline in Manitoba is about $1.65 per litre. That’s an increase of about 45 cents per litre since March 1.

Drivers in Manitoba are paying about 27 cents in federal and provincial taxes per litre of gasoline when they fill up, according to the CTF’s Gas Tax Honesty Report.

The federal government charges a hidden carbon tax through fuel regulations that costs seven cents per litre. GST costs Manitobans about 7.6 cents per litre.

The Manitoba government charges a provincial gas tax of 12.5 cents per litre. Every fill-up costs Manitoba families about $9 in the provincial gas tax for a minivan and $12 for a pick-up truck.

Kinew previously cut the provincial gas tax to zero in 2024. He referred to his previous year-long gas tax cut as “the most important thing that a provincial government ever did in the history of Manitoba.”

“We have heard loud and clear from Manitobans that this has been something that has made a difference,” Kinew said in another interview about the previous gas tax cut. “If it was up to me, the holiday would last forever.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney temporarily cut the 10 cents per litre federal gas tax in April. Polling shows that 63 per cent of Canadians oppose the federal government hiking fuel taxes in September.  

“It’s time for Kinew to bring back the gas tax cut and provide relief from sky-high gas prices,” Haubrich said. “Carney can keep providing relief by scrapping his plans to jack the federal fuel tax back up.”
