Manitoba Liberal MPs need to support carbon tax relief

Author: Gage Haubrich 2023/11/03

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on federal Liberal members of Parliament in Manitoba to support a motion to remove the carbon tax from all forms of home heating.

“Liberal MPs need to show that they work for their constituents by voting to support the removal of the carbon tax on home heating,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “NDP MPs have shown that they can put the needs of Manitobans first, its time for Liberal MPs to do the same.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government is removing the federal carbon tax from furnace oil for three years. On Monday, MPs will vote on a motion to call on the federal government to extend the carbon tax exemption to all forms of home heating.

About zero per cent of Manitobans use furnace oil to heat their homes. Instead, more than half of Manitobans rely on natural gas for home heating.

The average Canadian home uses about 2,385 cubic metres of natural gas per year. Removing the carbon tax on natural gas would save that household about $300 this year.

The federal NDP has committed to supporting the motion. The Manitoba government is also looking for “greater fairness” regarding affordability on home heating.

Trudeau credited his decision to bring in the carbon tax exemption on furnace oil to his “amazing” Atlantic MPs.

Manitoba currently has four Liberal MPs: Ben Carr, Terry Duguid, Kevin Lamoureux and Dan Vandal.

“Its time for Carr, Duguid, Lamoureaux and Vandal to show how amazing they are and demand relief for Manitobans,” said Haubrich. “Liberal MPs need to do what’s right and get Manitobans a break on the carbon tax.”
