Manitobans paying $550 more in provincial gas taxes this year

Author: Gage Haubrich 2025/08/21

WINNIPEG, MB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released its 27th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report to shine a light on all the hidden taxes that make trips to the pump more expensive.

“This year, Manitoba’s provincial gas tax is costing drivers up to $12 more per fill up,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Premier Wab Kinew needs to cut gas taxes to help Manitobans save money at the pump.”

Drivers in Manitoba are paying 29 cents per litre in taxes when they fill up, according to the CTF’s Gas Tax Honesty Report.

A two-car Manitoba family filling up once every two weeks is paying about $550 more in provincial gas taxes this year compared to last year.

The federal gas tax costs 10 cents per litre and the GST costs about 6.4 cents per litre of gas.

The Manitoba government hiked its provincial gas tax to 12.5 cents per litre on Jan. 1, 2025. It had previously cancelled its 14 cents per litre gas tax for the entirety of 2024.

Before the fuel tax was hiked, 73 per cent of Manitobans wanted the government to extend the tax cut again.

In the lead up to the gas tax hike, the government spent $91,000 on a taxpayer-funded ad campaign with billboards featuring slogans such as “Permanent gas tax cut starting January 1st.”

“Instead of using billboards to convince Manitobans they are better off with higher taxes, Kinew should actually make life more affordable by cutting fuel taxes again,” Haubrich said. “Manitobans need tax more tax relief to help make ends meet, not taxpayer-funded billboards spinning nonsense at them.”
