Moe needs to follow Alberta, P.E.I and the federal government and cut fuel taxes

SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Scott Moe to follow other provinces and the federal government and cut gas taxes to provide relief to Saskatchewanians facing high prices at the fuel pump.

The price of gasoline in Saskatchewan is about $1.82 per litre. The price of diesel is about $2.47 per litre.

“Other governments are rightly making life more affordable at the pumps and the Saskatchewan government needs to follow suit,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Moe can eliminate the provincial gas tax today and save drivers about $15 every time they fill up a pick-up truck.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his suspension of the federal 10 cent per litre gas tax and four cent per litre diesel tax until 2027 in early September.

The Alberta government is cutting its 13 cent per litre tax on gasoline and diesel on Oct. 1 to save drivers money.

The Prince Edward Island government cut its fuel tax on Sept. 26, saving Islanders 8.47 cents per litre on gasoline and 14.15 cents per litre on diesel until Jan. 31, 2027.

The Parti Québécois, currently leading Quebec election polling, is also promising to cut gas taxes if elected.

The Saskatchewan government currently charges a 15 cent per litre tax on gasoline and diesel. A Saskatchewan family pays about $11 in the provincial gas tax when they fill up a minivan and about $15 when they fill up a pick-up truck.

“Other provinces and the federal government are taking action on affordability and its time for Moe to do the same,” Haubrich said. “Moe knows that tax cuts make life more affordable and its time he gives Saskatchewanians the relief at the pumps they need.”
