Newfoundlanders and Labradorians pay more taxes at the pump than any provincial counterpart

  • CTF published its 23rd annual gas tax report this morning.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is using its 23rd annual Gax Tax Honesty Day to call on the government of Newfoundland and Labrador to reject HST and gas tax hikes from the Greene report.

“Gas tanks are not the only thing that gets filled up when Newfoundlanders and Labradorians go to the pump,” said CTF Interim Atlantic Director Renaud Brossard. “Families in Newfoundland and Labrador already pay 50 cents per litre when they get gas and they can’t afford even higher taxes.”

Only motorists in the cities of Montreal and Vancouver pay higher gas taxes due to transit taxes in those cities according to data from the CTF.

The Greene report suggests a one-point increase to the HST and 1.5 cents increase to the gasoline tax. This would translate into a 3 cents-per-litre increase at the pump.

The Greene report also highlighted the fact that Newfoundland and Labrador has had the highest per capita revenue of any province for 12 of the last 13 years.

“Raising taxes to solve a spending problem is like trying to help shopaholics by giving them new credit cards,” said Brossard. “Premier Andrew Furey needs to reject HST and gas tax hikes and stop digging ever deeper into Newfoundlanders and Labradorians’ pockets.”
